Housing

Across the United States, housing costs are skyrocketing, making it so that our young people can’t afford to buy a home. There are many reasons for this, and Chuck wants to tackle all of them.

Building Affordable Homes

Home builders get rich by building huge homes, rather than right-sized housing that’s perfect for a starting family. Big houses are more expensive to buy, repair, and heat, meaning that the cost keeps hitting a home buyer again and again. Chuck wants to incentivize builders to build starter homes, perfect for young families or downsizing older families, so that we’re increasing the number of houses available to buy.

Rebuilding Homes

Some homes could be liveable if they just had a little bit of love. Complex banking practices make it difficult for people to borrow money to fix a house. Chuck will look into home loan legislation that makes it easier to fix sad houses, which provides more affordable housing and addresses some of the eyesores that decrease our property values.

Raising the Minimum Wage

One of the major reasons that homes aren’t affordable in Maryland is because the minimum wage hasn’t kept up with our everyday costs. Chuck believes that if you work 40 hours a week, you should be able to afford to buy a house after a few years of saving – no matter what job you have. Chuck will work to raise the minimum wage so that everyone in Maryland has a home.
